. Some collectors have estimated a value of to for an example of this rare note—this auction is for a
    stack of 26 of ’em,
    in near-perfect condition!

It's a colorful fake bill featuring
    Santa Claus
and a pot of gold on the face and, on the back,
    "The State of Confusion"
    and
    "Scrambled Eggs for California."
The back story was described by the Society of Paper Money Collectors/
    Paper Money,
Spring 1972, in an article entitled "The Chelan-Townsend Test Fund and Its Checks," by George S. Vanderwende: "During the depression that developed in the United States in 1929, Dr. Francis E. On the other hand, the pensions would stimulate, so it was argued, the consumption of commodities. A considerable organization backed the plan which was discussed in Congress. The advocates of the plan were very active in California [where it was known as the Ham and Eggs Movement]. There was quite a battle between the pros and cons. The plan was so ridiculed by the cons that they issued
    The One Thursday Buck
[in 1938, not long before the election in which the plan was narrowly defeated]." Paper, 5 3/4 x 2-1/2".
