Description
1969 Chevrolet Chevelle Convertible
Like the Tri-Five Chevys that came before it, the Chevelle is one of those cars GM aced right out of the gate and continued to perfect. Eventually, the marque became one of the strongest brands in automotive history; and at one point, with a full list of body styles, options, trim grades, color combinations, and engines which ranged from mild to outrageous, literally embodied the 'custom built' nature that defines the muscle car era.
Offering up for consignment a 1969 Chevrolet Chevelle Convertible. This version has been "worked just a bit, but presents mostly as original. With its original 350ci L65 V8, and matching TH350 transmission, body bathed in black cherry paint which is the deep end of the pool, and a very nice interior which is like new and not original, we have a very attractive automobile available for you to get into the Malibu game.
Exterior
Blackened grille, headlight bezels, along with body matching paint in black cherry for the front and rear bumpers tend to give this car a more menacing look. Also with the use of horizontal shiny trim bars for the grille and the bowtie badge in the center, working with an angled rearward trimming that melts into the wheel well trim, the pointy front of this car is greatly accentuated. This trim works its way back just above the rocker and becomes a thinner rear wheel well trim then continues to the back bumper bottom. Gaps are nicely managed and all steel is straight and rust free. An SS hood now adorns the front, and a black convertible top with a new rear window is ready to be put down for that evening cruise. On back angled inward tail lighting is on each corner and below the black cherry painted bumper are chromed rectangular tipped exhaust protruding below this pristine bumper. 15 inch Super Sport wheels are wrapped in raised white letter BFG T/A's on all 4 corners. Some rust bubbling can be noted under the paint, and previous repairs are evident in areas throughout the exterior. A few dents and dings for the trim, and some areas of scratching mostly on the lower part of the car is noted within the paint.
Interior
Saddle brown vinyl now dresses the seats for the interior which are front Strato buckets and a rear bench. These are showing as fairly tight with just a few ripples near the black piping which borders the bolsters and inserts. All sides of the buckets are accented in black smooth vinyl, and the saddle brown covering is also gracing the door panels, which show with just a bit of loose vinyl stretches. The doors utilize the black for the sills and lowers, as well as the tops of the armrests. A saddle covered glovebox in the center console which also houses the aircraft style shifter races from front to rear. Total black bathes the dash which has its deep set original round gauges, a small smattering of wood appliqu behind the temp sliders and inset AM/FM radio just below. A wood rimmed steering wheel fronts this original dash setup. Black carpeting floods the floors, and we have a winner for the interior showing well with the exterior black cherry.
Drivetrain
A flip of the hood, and the engine and entire bay are just gleaming. All clean and shiny with no rust or even the beginnings of corrosion. Here resides the original 350ci V8 topped with a single 2-barrel carburetor, and backed by a TH350 3-speed automatic. A 12-bolt rear axle is on the back.
Undercarriage
Up on the lift our inspection reveals more beautiful restoration work with no rust or surface rust for this unibody constructed car. Floor pans, rockers and fuel tank are all in very good condition. Upfront is independent coil sprung suspension, and on back a 4 link setup with newer red painted coil springs. Power drum brakes provide the woah! factor, and a nice dual Flowmaster exhaust snakes its way rearward past all the black metal surfaces.
Drive-Ability
A quick starter and smooth idle which eventually after the warmup it was off to the test track. Here performance was good, bias free braking, and smooth ride and catlike handling were the norm for my drive. The dash lighting, A/C fan, horn and parking brake were all inoperable during my drive. Also the tonneau covering for the top needs some snaps put on to secure it to the body if you are going anywhere with top down at speed.
Overall a nicely done job, with a few faults throughout with the paint and trimmings. A newer interior certainly sets off the exterior when the top is down, and it runs like a champ. Ready for the plucking out of our hallowed halls here at Classic Auto Mall
