    Description

This is an exquisite Old Silver Flower Wedding Comb from Lampung, South Sumatra. Southeast Asia is ethnically complex and, as in all human cultures, the making and wearing of body ornaments is not a function of survival or simply a way of embellishing physical appearance. Rather, it expresses a range of personal and social conditions, ritual, beliefs and ideas, while also exhibiting artistic expression. Although a comb is but one small part of head adornment, the style in which it is made, the choice and combination of materials and colors, the decorative patterns on it, and how it is worn and where, all communicate group membership, social identity and position, personal achievement and gender.
Large and elaborate headdresses incorporating ornaments like this are still part of the traditional dress worn on festive and ceremonial occasions such as weddings in Borneo, Sarawak, Sumatra and other western islands of Indonesia. Elaborate metal headings gilded, embossed and engraved are attached to combs and worn tiara like on the front or top of the head. Such headdresses are part of the wedding regalia for bridal couples. They were passed down through families as treasured heirlooms.
