Russia, 5. december 1943
My dear kaäthe !
After a long and eager wait, today I received the first letter from you, from which I can see that you have been informed of my good arrival. It was the airmail letter Käthe. You only had a stamp on it and that is why the letter was carried as a standard letter and took so long. Next time you have to put two stamps on it, because that is the regulation. Well, now at least you are reassured knowing that I arrived here safely. It was not that easy. I have also settled in again to some extent, because it is no use hanging your head, you have to do your duty. You know that I'm not one of those who let their guard down. Sometimes the memories of home are still buzzing around in my head, and that's normal, because thoughts of home have to help me get over some difficult hours. I'm still doing just fine. I have my old post again, albeit in a slightly different way. Winter has powerfully moved in here, but we are well supplied with warm things. In our section the Russian was brought to a halt. He is trapped in a large cauldron and will probably be finished off in the near future. Your backpack I have already sent some time ago, as well as a package with 2 cans of fish. I'm glad, Käthe, that you want to fulfill my every wish, if it is possible. In the meantime, I have made another wish with the glasses. I have been with Beresen a few times. Well, I'm glad that I was able to make my wife happy with the package. If you ever get out, please say hello to Mrs. Berensen for me and tell her that I delivered the kiss from her little daughter to her daddy. That's reassuring about the safe deposit box, Käthe. Will my silver also fit in it? It is not much. I am very grateful to you for that. I also have a lot of correspondence with Karl. He always sends me newspapers. He is lucky if he can stay where he is. So, for today, thank you for everything. All the best and many love greetings from your brother Hans. Many warm greetings to father and mother
